# Delegating to a Nepal Remote Team: An Escalation Matrix

“The numbers do not match. Please advise.” An overseas manager receives that message near the end of their working day. They need to ask which numbers, what changed and which decision is blocking the work. The task has an owner, but the decision process is incomplete.

Delegating to a Nepal remote team works better when recurring exceptions have explicit boundaries. The proposed worksheet below defines what the specialist may do, what requires approval and what waits safely when an answer is unavailable. It is an editorial planning framework, not a tested DCV methodology or a grant of authority.

## Separate doing the work from deciding an exception

A specialist can gather evidence, explain options and recommend a response without being authorised to make the final decision. Name both the person progressing the work and the person deciding the exception.

[Atlassian's DACI play](https://www.atlassian.com/team-playbook/plays/daci) distinguishes a driver, an approver and other participants. [GitLab's documented decision-making practice](https://handbook.gitlab.com/handbook/leadership/making-decisions/) also identifies an accountable decision owner. These are attributed operating examples, not universal rules or proof of a particular productivity gain.

For routine delegation, translate that distinction into the actual workflow. “Own the monthly report” might include assembling data and explaining discrepancies. It need not include changing a metric definition, accepting financial risk or publishing an unresolved result.

## Write six boundaries for each recurring exception

| Field | Question to answer | Fictional reporting example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Triggering fact | What observable event requires a decision? | Two enquiry exports produce different totals |
| Already authorised action | What may the specialist do independently? | Preserve both exports and compare dates, filters and definitions |
| Boundary | Which action requires express approval? | Changing the published reporting definition or releasing a material unresolved result |
| Decision owner and fallback | Who may decide, including during absence? | Named marketing owner; a substitute only if authority is expressly assigned |
| Evidence and response window | What is needed, and by when in whose working hours? | Both versions, identified differences, proposed resolution and effect on the reporting deadline |
| Safe hold | What happens if no answer arrives? | Hold the affected report, flag the delay and continue unrelated approved work |

A fallback contact is not automatically an authorised approver. Check the person's actual authority and availability before putting them in the matrix. Unanswered messages do not expand the specialist's permission.

## Send a decision-ready escalation

In the fictional example, the specialist might write: “The two exports show different enquiry totals for the same reporting period. Export A excludes repeat submissions; export B includes them. I have preserved both files and the filter settings. The reporting definition does not state how repeat submissions should be handled. Please confirm the definition before the report is released. The affected report is held; the other approved reporting work can continue.”

The message identifies the fact, investigation, missing rule and safe hold. It does not silently choose the larger number. Attach only the evidence the authorised recipient needs, using the organisation's approved systems and access controls.

For another hypothetical workflow, a broken link can be corrected to an already approved destination within a defined publishing role. Replacing the destination with a new offer may require marketing approval. The matrix should make that boundary clear instead of treating every website action as equivalent.

## Test non-response and changed decisions

Walk through one ordinary exception with the specialist and approver. Can the specialist identify the boundary? Does the approver receive enough context? Is the response window feasible within agreed working hours? What exactly remains held if the manager is absent?

Then test a changed decision. Identify who updates the instructions, which people need to know and how superseded guidance is marked. An approval in a private message can leave the rest of the team following an old rule.

Keep sensitive HR, financial, security, legal and regulated decisions on their existing authorised routes. This matrix does not replace incident response, employment procedures or security approvals. Avoid fixed response promises unless the parties have actually agreed them.

When scoping a dedicated role through [DCV's recruitment and HR services](https://digitalconsultingventures.com/recruitment-in-nepal), bring one recurring workflow and its approval bottlenecks. Agree the decisions, limits and manager commitments alongside the task list.
